Summer student 2024

Location: Toronto

Dates of employment: May 21 to August 16, 2024

Application deadline: February 16, 2024 (interviews to be held the week of February 26)

Job description:

Rudnicki & Company is a criminal defence firm located in Toronto, Ontario. We are criminal defence lawyers who believe in a world without prisons. Our prime directive is to serve our clients by keeping them free. We defend accused persons at trial, help convicted persons pursue appeals against conviction and sentence, and provide advice to witnesses and victims at all stages of the criminal process. We are seeking a summer student to support our practice for the summer of 2024.

If hired, your primary responsibilities will include writing research memoranda, reviewing and summarizing disclosure and transcripts, providing administrative support, and appearing in court on behalf of the firm’s clients for remand appearances. You will support counsel in oral argument on bails, trials, motions, and appeals. You will work on complex, serious, and precedent-setting cases at all levels of court and will participate in a values-driven criminal defence practice.

This is a learning position. You should come with strong research and writing skills and a demonstrated interest in criminal law. You should be a critical thinker who sees the practice of law as a means of achieving systemic change while helping individual clients. You should enjoy solving tough problems and be eager to support the work of a small but energetic legal team. Over the course of the summer, we will help you channel these talents and values into a solid foundation of practical skills to start your legal career.

Rudnicki & Company is dedicated to maintaining a diverse team of lawyers and support staff that reflect the full diversity of the communities we serve. We encourage and will give preference to applications from equity-seeking groups. This position is open to law students in first or second year, but preference will be given to 2L students.

Compensation:

This a full-time position. Compensation is $800/week. You will be included in the firm benefits plan. You will be given five personal days that can be taken for any reason.

How to apply:

Please forward your resumé, cover letter, transcripts, and a short writing sample to the attention of Chris Rudnicki at info@rudnickilaw.com. All applications will be held in confidence. Only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

Rudnicki & Company is committed to an equal opportunity recruitment process. Accommodations are available to all applicants upon request.
