Chris believes in a world without prisons. He leaves no stone unturned in the fight to keep his clients out of jail. This approach yields remarkable results.

Chris won his first ever criminal trial over ten years ago, while still in law school and working at a student clinic. He has spent his career building on that foundation to become an expert in all things criminal law. He has argued hundreds of cases at every level of court in Ontario and at the Supreme Court of Canada. Meanwhile, he studied part-time to earn a Master of Laws degree with a specialization in criminal law and procedure. He teaches Advanced Criminal Law at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Toronto Metropolitan University. And within a year of founding his own firm, he was selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in Canada in the area of criminal defence.

Chris combines his mastery of the law and his passion for helping people by focusing his practice on criminal appeals. Losing a criminal case is a traumatic experience. A person who has been found guilty loses their reputation in the community and often also loses their freedom. Chris helps restore his clients’ sense of control by first working to secure them bail pending appeal. This way, his clients can remain in the community and go about their lives while he works diligently to scour the record and identify the right legal issue to achieve the best possible result.

Chris regularly gives lectures, publishes articles, and speaks with media about emerging issues in the criminal law. His work has been featured in For the Defence, the Criminal Law Quarterly, the Canadian Bar Review, and the Supreme Court Law Review. He wrote the chapter on appeals in McWilliams’ Canadian Criminal Evidence, the authoritative text on the law of evidence in Canada. He delivers seminars for the Criminal Lawyers’ Association and the National Judicial Institute and regularly guest lectures at law schools across Ontario. His comments have appeared in the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, CTV News, and CBC Radio.

Chris strongly believes in public service. He is a member of the Pro Bono Inmate Assistance Program at the Court of Appeal for Ontario, helping people who can’t afford a lawyer to identify winning legal issues on appeal. He serves as review counsel at the Pardons Clinic at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, helping law students file applications for record suspensions on behalf of community members. He is a member of the Criminal, Gladue, and Extremely Serious Matters panels at Legal Aid Ontario. He sits on the Board of Directors for the Criminal Lawyers’ Association. He regularly gives pro bono legal advice to political activists and victims of police violence.
